I Am Young and Dead

Nana was married twice, not including the married man she had an affair with when she was seventy-eight.  His name was George and he ate mostly meat pies and told the same joke every time I met him.  I don’t know what she saw in him.

Then there was Pop, who was her second husband.  He didn’t live with us for long on account of the fact that he thought he was a train.  His tongue would no longer fit in his mouth and he would hide in the corner and scream if I went near him.  At five years old, I didn’t know what he was screaming about but now I realize he was screaming because he was afraid of death.  They put him in the front room when he died and told me I had to kiss him goodnight.  Fortunately, they had managed to get his tongue back in his mouth by then.  But no way was I kissing a dead person, even if he was going to sleep for all eternity.

Nana was worried that when she died she would have two husbands in Heaven, both lazing around and wanting her to fetch them cups of tea.  She didn’t know if she was going to Heaven as an old lady or a young girl, with one husband or two.

In the end she made her own mind up.  She decided to go to Heaven as a young girl, bare foot and running in the heather, chasing the golden-tailed dragonflies in the setting Highland sun.  With not a single husband in sight.

What do we go to Heaven as?  I’m not sure myself but I hope I don’t have to see Pop again.  Especially if he still thinks he’s a train.
